Here are my top games lists for new owners of Nintendo 3DS:
CORE TITLES
#1: Super Mario 3D Land (demonstrates the best features of the console)
#2: Mario Kart 7 (it...well...it's Mario Kart)
#3: The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (nostalgia meets innovation and forms into something wonderful)
#4: Fire Emblem: Awakening (the most newbie-friendly entry, though vets can still play the traditional way)
#5: Kid Icarus: Uprising (a masterpiece of a reboot created by industry legend Sakurai Masahiro and Project Sora)
#6: Star Fox 64 3D (a quality remake of a true Nintendo 64 classic)
#7: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (a beloved Zelda-series title receives a makeover)
#8: Pokémon X or Pokémon Y (the seventh paired versions in the main series brings new innovations)
#9: New Super Mario Bros. 2 (the return of Raccoon Mario...and the début of Fox Luigi!)
#10: Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS (the first handheld Smash title is WAY worth it)
VIRTUAL CONSOLE
#1 and #2: The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages
#3: The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX
#4: Game & Watch Gallery 2 (a collection of some brilliant G&W remakes)
#5: Pokémon Trading Card Game
#6: Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3
#7: Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins
#8: Mole Mania (a quirky action puzzler by Miyamoto Shigeru)
#9: Donkey Kong '94
#10: Donkey Kong Land
Honourable Mention - Metroid II: Return of Samus (you seem like the type who enjoys Metroid games)
3DS DOWNLOAD
#1: Pullblox/Pushmo
#2: Fallblox/Crashmo
#3: Pokémon Dream Radar (awesome if you have Black 2 or White 2, pointless if you don't)
#4: 3D Classics: Excitebike (Do do DO do-do DO!)
#5: 3D Classics: Kirby's Adventure
I hope this helps!

I'd also suggest Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate for you. The new Monster Hunter will also be out early next year.
