A Hidden Treasure Ahoy!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Developed by Nihon Falcom Games and published by NIS America, Ys X: Nordics is the tenth mainline game in the long-running Ys series, and changes up the way you explore and battle in many ways compared to previous entries in the series, but does this title live up to its predecessors or does it fall a bit short? Continue reading our review to find out!
The story of Ys X: Nordics is great as expected with plenty of adventure and intrigue as is always the case in this series, and this entry does not disappoint in the slightest! The gameplay adds a lot to the formula this time around with ocean exploration, and a unique battle system that allows both main party members to fight as one in a unique twist to the formula that links both protagonists in battle allowing for joint attacks, dual skills, united defense, and other nuances such as bosses with armored HP bars that can't be damaged until you break their armor gauge among other new gameplay mechanics!
The game is pretty long as well clocking in at 60+ hours in length so expect to set aside quite a few sessions for this title! The controls are easy to learn, but can take time to fully master since the battle system has been revamped and feels like a wholly new series as a result. As for the difficulty, the game's got a bit of a learning curve, but in-general it's not too difficult even at the higher difficulty settings, so expect a bit of a challenge at times, but nothing that'll bar your ability to progress further into the game!
The audiovisual-presentation in Ys X: Nordics is as fantastic as expected from a Falcom game with a soundtrack that fits the game's mood to a tee, as well as top-notch voice acting, and gorgeous character and enemy models that look absolutely incredible and the game's world looks just as good aesthetically in our opinions! Overall the game's audiovisual-presentation is flawless in our opinions!
Bottom-Line: With a superb story, excellent gameplay, great controls, a decent amount of content, and a flawless audiovisual-presentation, Ys X: Nordics is a fantastic RPG that is well worth adding to your game library and as such we award the game a perfect level of recommendation to all PS5 JRPG fans!
Darn it… I typed up this whole silly bit in an implied creepy-hammy villain tone (the punchline being “Yyysssss…”), until my phone fritzed up a little which caused me to click off the page and into a completely different part of the site…
