New Super Mario Bros. Wii is the first 2D style Mario platformer on a home console since Super Mario World 2 for the (SNES). As usual, Bowser and his Koopalings have kidnapped Princess Peach and it's up to Mario to save her.
The biggest new feature in this game is the 2-4 player co-op and vs. modes which allow up to 4 players to play simultaniously, help each other or go for the most coins or points. Another new feature are the star coins that are hidden in each level that can be spent on hints and secrets videos at Peachs' castle. A level in the secret world will unlock once you collect all star coins in all the levels of a world as well. Speaking of worlds, NSMBW has over 80 levels accross 8 different themed worlds as well as a ninth secret world.
Mario is no stranger to awesome power-ups and this game has some new ones. There is a propeller hat that, with a flip of the wrist, lets you fly in the air and glide down just like a helicopter. Of course the game also features classic power ups such a fire flowers and stars. Even Yoshi appears in some of the levels in the game to help out by allowing you to ride on his back and by eating enemies or sending hammers or fireballs back at them.
This game also has some of the most creative levels you'll ever see in any game and also features levels based on the famous haunted house and the air fortress levels of previous games in the series.
The graphics are awesome and feature detailed 2.5D character and enemy models on colorful and cheerful background scenes that actually move across the screen as you progress through each level. The soundtrack is also one of the best you'll hear on any 2D platformer as the music is varied ranging from cute to silly and even creepy.
This game is blisteringly difficult but makes up for it with a massive amount of 1-ups that can easily be obtained as well as mid level checkpoints and even an auto finish feature in which Luigi will finish the level for you. This can be optionally activated if you lose many lives on the same level.
Bottom line: Add 2-4 player simultanious gameplay on top of Marios' already epic 2D platforming and you've got yourself an epic game that is absolutely perfect.
Score 10/10
10- Perfect This game is nearly perfect, and has little if any flaws, and is a blast to play!
