Like a black hole
Most people who watched the recent Nintendo Direct were probably excited, and maybe surprised, that Wii games are heading to the Wii U eShop, starting with Super Mario Galaxy 2 (available now). While this is good news, a few Wii U owners are experiencing difficulties with Super Mario Galaxy 2 crashing.
According to the tech forum post on Nintendo's website, this is what happens upon loading the game:
- Screen goes black.
- Gamepad shows white Wii logo briefly, like it does when you run Wii Mode
- After ~10 seconds, the external hard drive clicks off.
- After 2-3 minutes, the Wii U reboots.
The same tech support post said moving it to the system memory makes it work, but it won't work when loaded onto an external drive. The poster says the hard drive in question still runs other Wii U games, and other people have chimed in saying they are having the same problem, so this isn't an isolated incident nor is it a failing hard drive. Hopefully this will be fixed soon, if you are having the same problem you should contact Nintendo's tech support

Wow, this seems like a pretty serious problem. Lucky I haven't bought it yet.

My download of Super Mario Galaxy 2 works without any issues so I'm thinking that it's a hard-drive compatibility issue.

This problem is effecting all Buffalo brand external HDD's.
There are many other brands that are seemingly more susceptible to this issue lol.

I sometimes have a weird signal interference on my GamePad when playing normal Wii U games (the display and sound have short bursts of partial freezing), which I think could be caused by my hard drive*, so it's probably a good idea to avoid this title for now, or at least buy it for Wii.
*I doubt it's the hard drive, though, as this interference also occurs on all three of my disc-based Wii U games.
