Zed started out as a character in a series of stories set in one of my D&D worlds. Recently, however, I've been toying with the idea of having some version of Zed appear in every world, and therefore making him a bizarre oddity. In a sense he would be akin to Cid from the Final Fantasy series, except that Zed is the exact same person appearing in every world, whereas the Cids are all completely different people who share a name.

The part of the world in which that version of Zed lives has a thick, barely-breathable atmosphere due to the nature of the surrounding environment. The drachomi who live there can survive just fine, but humans need to wear a breather in order to breathe easily, hence Zed's requirement of such a device. Interestingly, one of his allies, a young woman named Amy Mitchell, has no need for a breather; she is able to subconsciously shield herself from the dangerous parts of the air using her psychic powers.

It's sometimes hard to tell if an anime character is male or female. The character in your avatar looks like a girl, but that only increases the likelihood of him being a guy.
