I believe part of the reason PS2 is still successful is the accessibility in third world countries. Plus, people in wealthy countries who didn't pick up the system in its heyday now have a chance to buy tons of games for cheap. I think PS2 will be around and kicking at least until the PS4 launches.

That's good to hear. I just wish they'd drop the price now since I've gone through two PS2s before and wouldn't mind picking up another one so I can play Klonoa 2.

Agreed with everything.
The PS2 is definitely a fantastic successor to the PS1, and this news does not surprise me one bit.

Sony has sold 16,000 PS2's globally since the beginning of this month, which is staggering.

That's true, but I think the scale is different. Maybe it's just me, but I always see way more PlayStation 2 games than Xbox or GameCube games whenever I visit a game shop. It makes sense too, since GC and Xbox combined sold around 50 million whereas PlayStation 2 has now surpassed 150 million...
I also think Nintendo and Microsoft have stopped producing their consoles while the PS2 is still readily available new in many countries. I'm guessing the GameCube you saw was used?
I do know the Game Boy Advance was still selling a few years ago, though. Maybe the Cube is alive in third world countries as well.

Ah who knows. I thought thought it was odd. Sales does make sense though. PS2 is a very high selling console. The only other one to Rival the Wii in sales.
