Popular retro games that you purchased that don't live up to their hype.

I recently purchased Final Fantasy VII and even though the game is amazing it fails to live up to its god like reputation it has been given by fans of the series.

I have wondered for years about the hype for FFVII. I bought it a and played it when the PS first came out heck it is even the reason why I bought my PS in the first place. But after the great gem that is FFVI, FFVII just fell short. Sad thing is most people that hype up FFVII have never even played the first six FF which is really sad.

Final Fantasy IX was my favorite. Am I weird?

Final Fantasy VII has the best story in the entire series in my opinion, however the gameplay is one of the worst in the series so it balances things out. I would still recommend the game for its story and the Chocobo Racing minigame.

I dont know I found the story of FFVI to be better than VII but hey thats me. As for the Chocobo racing OMG that was one of the reasons I stopped playing FFVII lol.

Final Fantasy X was really popular, but I thought it was the first bad Final Fantasy game
I did like Final Fantasy XII even though most people didn't like that game

Earthbound has too much hype behind it in my opinion. It's a very good game - but it's not as godly as many of its fans will have you believe, and it's not that different from Dragon Quest; the game franchise to which it owes its roots. The fact that it's so rare hasnt helped dispell the huge amount of hype either.
